Maui Memories

by James A. Frank

After returning from a Golf Road Warriors trip (and I think this one to Maui was my fourth or fifth), I try to take a few days, gather my thoughts, and write a wrapping-up story with observations meant to make your trip to the same area more fun. Problem is, it’s damn-near impossible to make a Maui meander any more fun than it’s sure to be. The whole place is already all about fun first …

Kapalua’s Plantation Course: A BIG Golf Experience

by Brian McCallen

TAP image

Simply said, Kapalua’s Plantation Course was one of the genuine highlights of the trip. Never mind the fact that at least one Golf Road Warrior made a deal with Pele, the volcano goddess, to have his scorecard scorched in molten lava after the round. To be honest, my score was insignificant. To play the Plantation Course, a spectacle unto itself and a golf experience unlike any other in Hawaii, was a privilege.
Opened in 1991, the …

The Terrace: An Understated Gem at The Ritz-Carlton, Kapalua

by Brian McCallen

The Golf Road Warriors were privileged to enjoy some exceptional dining experiences during our week-long sojourn through Maui. My favorite among them was dinner at The Terrace, The Ritz-Carlton, Kapalua’s new “concept” restaurant.
A bright, spare, multi-level room with a plantation-inspired design, The Terrace’s green, gold, and textured fabrics, coupled with its floor-to-ceiling windows, serve to connect diners with the landscape. The room is low-key and understated by Ritz-Carlton standards, but the resort wanted a casual, …

Doing Battle At The Plantation

by James A. Frank

KapPlantation18

Whenever golfers discuss the merits of our sport someone inevitably mentions that it is the only one in which amateurs like us can tackle the same fields of play used by the professionals. I don’t know offhand how many PGA Tour courses are accessible to us mortals, but I’d think maybe a third are resort or public-access.

The Massive (and Massively Cool) Kapalua Golf Experience

Bay Course #4 Pano

If you’re at all like me, you probably feel that golf is just much too easy. In which case you owe it to yourself to play a round at Kapalua Resort’s Plantation Course– home to the Hyundai Tournament of Champions, the PGA TOUR’s season-opening event. If you happen to win a PGA Tour event this year, you’ll be invited to next January’s Hyundai.

Kapalua Karma

All around the world, the name Ritz-Carlton is synonymous with the finest hotels and resorts. But here on Maui, Ritz-Carlton has another meaning: According to Clifford Nae’ole, this beautiful property has been “ground zero for the renaissance in Hawaiian culture.”
Nae’ole is cultural advisor to The Ritz-Carlton Kapalua, here both to make sure the resort does things right and to represent it to different communities—guests, schools, groups, companies, etc.—interested in the traditions, history, and heritage that …

TAP Beer of the Day: CoCoNut PorTeR

by Tom Bedell

TAP image

The first time I was lucky enough to try the Maui Brewing Co.’s CoCoNut PorTeR was after some had been delivered to me in Vermont, about the time ten inches of snow had fallen.
This time I ran across it in its natural habitat, and was lucky enough to be in The Terrace Restaurant at the Ritz-Carlton Kapalua. For starters, the weather was a lot better.
Drinking the beer with a thick blanket of Vermont snow visible …

TAP Beer of the Day: Big Swell IPA

I suppose it’s as good a time as any to talk about the Kona Brewing Company. Somewhere along the line I overruled my better judgment and had a Longboard Lager. I pretty much got what I expected— a bellywash lawnmower beer with little character beyond a disagreeable vegetal note.
I grant you, I was prejudiced going in, since I know Kona is part of the Craft Brew Alliance, which includes Widmer Brothers Brewing, Redhook Ale Brewery, …

Landing at Gourmandy

by Jeff Wallach

The true gourmand measures his day as a collection of minutes and hours filled with activities meant to pass the time between meals. No place is this more true than at the Kapalua Resort on the Hawaiian island of Maui in summer. Although resort guests can indulge in the usual frivolity of playing…
